Is love more powerful than magic? (Are the two mutually exclusive?) In witch romance books, love and magic are often pitted against one another (see classic precedents like Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic). The best books about witchy romances put a spotlight on the struggles modern women face as they juggle self-identity with the pursuit of love. And their plots involve a healthy draft of mishaps and blunders...let's just say you should finish this reading list before you plant your next love potion. In the genre of witch romance books, everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and that's part of the fun. But so is ending on a positive note, something we can rely on with the genre of "romance"--if not in life, then at least in literature, right?

#1. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

This fish-out-of-water romance novel with a witchy twist hits on the universal need for acceptance and belonging. In this cozy read, we meet an adopted witch named Mika Moon struggling with the loneliness of being one of Britain's few witches. After a lifetime of hiding her powers, an unexpected message lures her to a remote home where three young witches provide lessons on how to wield magic in the company of what can be considered a quirky cast of characters. The "love story" here involves both romance and the warmth of finding a chosen family. Yes, there's even a dreamy and mysterious librarian.

#2. The Witch's Cottage: A Cozy Witch Romance (Season of the Witch Book 1) by Emberly Wyndham

Using a cottage as a metaphor for love and transformation, The Witch's Cottage brings us to an enchanted village named Faunwood where a young witch named Aurora Silvermoon has just inherited a little cottage from her aunt. She enlists the help of a local carpenter named Alden to make her dreams of transforming the cottage's peeling paint and hole-filled roof into a whimsical place come true. While the last thing Alden wants to do is fall in love with green-haired Aurora and her witchy vibes, both the cottage and hearts begin to transform.

#3. A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley

Leave it to a witch to experience the conundrum of sort of falling for a demon who wants her soul. The prophecy of being one of the most powerful witches to come around in centuries weighs heavily on Mariel Sparks. Despite the pressure, all she really wants to do is brew potions and grow herbs for her own signature hexes. Unfortunately, her dalliances in homespun hexes result in the summoning of a demon who bargains for her soul. With both doing their best to hold out until the time to strike a deal expires, all of that time spent together starts to make love blossom. The only problem is that you can't actually love after your soul is lost.

#4. The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

A good fit for anyone who has tried to nurse a broken heart with bubble baths, liquor, and curses, The Ex Hex blends elements of romantic comedy with dark intrigue. The only thing more electrifying than the chemistry between Vivienne Jones and a heartbreaking bad body with deep ancestral ties to the town named Rhys is the constant danger that's stalking the air around them. As one thing after another goes wrong in town, Vivienne discovers that the hex she placed on her ex years prior may not have been a little more powerful than intended.

#5. Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson

Like any good witch story, this one has a mad cool haunted house with the name of Bedlam. Naturally, Bedlam House is situated down a forested lane in a quaint English village called Good Winter. Among Bedlam House's (living) inhabitants are Essie Winterscale, whose mother comes and goes from her life via vintage portraiture. When heartbroken Josh, Bedlam House's new landlord, moves from Seattle--knowing nothing of quaint English village life--romance, hexes, times travel, and hundreds of years of rent debt ensue.

#6. The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall

If you've watched Practical Magic over and over, the curse of four heartbreaks in The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic will seem a little familiar. While Sadie Revelare has never questioned the curse being worth her magic before, priorities change when her first love returns to town after a long hiatus. Sadie soon finds herself battling family secrets and heartache that leave her questioning if magic really is more important than love.

#7. The League of Gentlewoman Witches by India Holton

While members of the League of Gentlewomen Witches are usually focused on improving the world in small ways using magic in the most prim and proper ways possible, they are thrown into a tailspin when a talisman called the amulet of Black Beryl is discovered. As the group's leader, Charlotte knows she has to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. This pursuit puts her on a collision course with a not-so-charming pirate named Alex who might just steal her heart and the amulet at the same time.
